A Work Trip Filled with Culinary Surprises

Traveling for work often presents unique opportunities to explore new places, and my recent trip to Butte, Montana, was no exception. Although I had passed through Butte years ago during undergrad, this visit allowed me to truly discover the town for the first time. The purpose of the trip was to conduct mock hospital surveys, a task that brought me together with a group of colleagues. One of the perks of this kind of work trip is the chance to dine out and enjoy each other's company away from the pressures of the job.

Our culinary journey in Butte started off on a less impressive note at Taco Del Sol, which felt like a lackluster version of Chipotle. It was quickly decided that we wouldn't be returning there. However, the dining experience took a delightful turn the following night at Casagranda’s Steakhouse, thanks to a recommendation from the locals. The need for reservations hinted at the quality of the meal to come, and it did not disappoint. I chose the filet mignon accompanied by a side of mac and cheese, both of which were exceptional. The steak was succulent and cooked precisely to my medium-rare specification, while the mac and cheese was richly creamy and utterly satisfying. It was a meal that highlighted the steakhouse's commitment to quality and flavor.

To wrap up two days of work, we visited Headframe Distillery, a local spot known for its spirits and welcoming tasting room. Limited to two drinks, I opted for the pumpkin pie martini and the Grinch, both seasonal offerings that captured the festive spirit. Seeking dinner afterwards led us to the Uptown Café, which, to our disappointment, was only serving small plates that evening. Our plans shifted, and we found ourselves at Metals, a restaurant intriguingly situated in an old bank. Dining amidst the history, with some tables even located inside the vault, added a unique touch to the meal.

The exploration of Butte's nightlife brought us to 51 below, a speakeasy that demanded a secret phone number for entry. The atmosphere was charming, though my first drink choice, a bartender’s special root beer float concoction, was not to my taste. However, the Orphan Girl Espresso Martini that followed more than made up for it, perfectly blending the rich flavors of coffee and liquor.

Before our departure the next morning, we discovered a quaint eatery in the airport named the Ore Cart. There, I enjoyed a satisfying breakfast sandwich and a chai latte, providing a cozy end to our Butte adventure.

Reflecting on the trip, Butte surprised me with its culinary depth and the warmth of its people. The town may not be widely known as a food destination, but my experiences from fine dining to unique local bars suggest otherwise. Butte left a lasting impression, and I’m eagerly anticipating my next visit, not just for the work but for the unexpected delights this Montana town has to offer.
